Early Black Powder Keg, Ovoid Form, Hand-Wrought Iron Bands, 18th Century

$285.00

This black powder keg dates to the late 17th - early 18th century and was used for securely storing and transporting black powder for use with the firearms of the day. Made in an ovoid form, it could comfortably be carried by a soldier. Note the tight hand-planed staves secured with hand-wrought iron bands & nails. This tight construction kept the important contents dry and secure and is of the construction that would have been used during the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812.

Surely the leather strap and pegs are old replacements. Evidence of black powder can still be found inside and outside the piece. The keg measures 10-3/4" tall (not including peg stoppers) x 8-1/2" x 5-1/4".
